The Pioneer Spirit: The Story of Yio Chu Kang Secondary
Born from the Community
Born from the aspirations of a young nation, Yio Chu Kang Secondary School was founded in 1965, the 61st school established in a newly independent Singapore.
Unlike many state-planned schools, its creation was a direct response to personal requests from the farming community of Yio Chu Kang to their Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, for a school to serve their children.
Officially opened by then-Minister for Education Mr. Ong Pang Boon, the school began as an integrated English and Chinese-stream institution. This model was a critical nation-building strategy, designed to place multiple language streams under a single administration to foster social integration and underscore the importance of bilingualism.

Four Transformations
Campus Transformation 1: The Pioneer Campus (1965)
Operating out of modest, zinc-roofed buildings at the 11th milestone of Yio Chu Kang Road, the pioneer batch of educators and students established a tight-knit community. This early era forged the school’s signature spirit of resilience, proving from the very beginning that a school's heart and community matter far more than its physical infrastructure.
Campus Transformation 2: A New Home in Ang Mo Kio (1982)
Moving to the burgeoning housing estate of Ang Mo Kio in 1982 marked a major leap forward in resources and facilities. This relocation allowed Yio Chu Kang Secondary to build a rich arts legacy, laying the structural and cultural groundwork for what would eventually evolve into its current Learning for Life Programme (LLP).
Campus Transformation 3: The Village Campus (2001)
Our campus underwent a dramatic redesign modeled after a modern "village." This award-winning architectural concept beautifully blended the school's original rustic, community-centric heritage with purpose-built, state-of-the-art arts facilities.
Campus Transformation 4: Union of Legacies (2018)
Yio Chu Kang Secondary School merged with Chong Boon Secondary School and doing so, integrated the proud achievements and rich heritages of both institutions. Our campus was revitalized to serve a broader, diverse student body ensuring that a shared legacy continues to inspire future generations.
