2011 marks my 10th year serving as Principal of Yio Chu Kang Secondary School. Established in 1965, the school has a rich history and tradition with a strong foundation. Sustained commitment in the provision of quality holistic education with an emphasis on character education has prepared our students to be competent and confident individuals who use their talents and abilities for the benefit of the community.
Having started from very humble beginnings, the school has done very well in recent years. This year, we are proudly accorded Academic Achievement (Value-Added) (Silver) status in both the Express and Normal streams. Being accorded Development Awards in both Character Development and National Education, the school has also been awarded the Sustained Achievement Awards in CHERISH, Uniformed Groups and Aesthetics. Once again, the school has done well in the Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging with our talented students winning themselves one Gold (with Honours), two Golds, two Silvers and one Bronze awards. I am happy that our students have done themselves proud in the Moral (德), Cognitive (智), Physical (体), Social (群) and Aesthetic (美) domains.
Our accomplishments can be attributed to several key factors. An institution built on sound fundamentals with a strong conviction in developing our students holistically through diverse pathways and opportunities regardless of their background, we have always endeavoured in providing rigour in teaching and learning coupled with high expectations and standards. Our SAC, alumni, parents and other strategic partners have synergistically collaborated with us, each playing a complementary role. Our teachers are willing to be innovative and ensure relevance in their students’ learning for the future.
We will persist to creatively deliver a student-centric values-driven education. Encouraging ourselves to enable all our students to succeed, we will continue to cater to the needs of our students optimally through raising the capacity and capability of our students and teachers. I encourage parents to continue to work with the school in strengthening our strong partnership, one that is founded on mutual respect and shared understanding that we all want to grow our children to be the future leaders of our community.
No one trips over a mountain. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain. Persevere!
